Inside the Vienna Opera House, prior to the Nutcracker ballet starting

Mike, Aaron, and I standing outside the gates to Schönbrunn Palace

Aaron, Mike, and I sliding on ice on a very cold day on the Schönbrunn Palace grounds

At the Naschmarkt flea market, we had to get a photo of the lederhosen on sale

Felber is the local bakery we patronized on a regular basis. Just some of the goodies we enjoyed eating, including Mike's personal favourite, the giant cinnamon bun at the front!

M and M,

Great travel pix; the two of you look like you've had a blast, and I can see why Vienna is so highly regarded as a city to live in. Getting home's always nice, though, right?

Thank you for your earlier comments about learning Dutch. Doesn't sound too daunting after all and what you said confirmed what I was intuitively thinking -- the Dutch appreciate some effort to learn their language, but as soon as they hear the accent -- bam! -- they switch to English.

Recommendation for you and Mike in case you haven't seen it: the Dutch movie, Simon: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393775/. It's a lot of fun and gives great insight into how advanced in some ways Dutch culture is. Be sure to get the subtitled version!

I'm planning on coming over the end of October to probably Den Haag, as I'm more comfortable living in an apartment than a house, and Wassenaar seems to be primarily houses. Based on your language comments, that gives me enough time to get some elemental Dutch under my belt before I arrive.

Oh, one more link before I forget: there's a man in Wassenaar who has posted a ton of GORGEOUS nature photos shot right in Wassenaar, and they are a must see; currently 682 photos primarily of your area: http://www.flickr.com/photos/de_buurman/

Keep warm,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Hey, cool links, thanks for those. The nature photos, which are spectacular, are taken about a 5 minute bike ride from our apartment, so I'll try to get inspired and do some of my own there (de Horsten, it's the park where the crown prince and his family live).
The Hague is definitely a better place for apartments, also for any sort of a social life - Mike and I are always leaving Wassenaar to go to other places to spend time with friends. If you are coming over on your own, you will likely find more stimulation from The Hague.
If you haven't checked it already, a good site for rental / purchase is: www.funda.nl. It's in Dutch, but there are some English descriptions as well. Just remember "te Koop" means for Sale and "te Huur" is for Rent!
Happy Sunday, Monica
